Performing a disaster recovery deletes all previous versions

Hi jprateragg,

During the initial full backup of the files, StoreGrid will generate the signature/checksum for the backed up files and store the signature/checksum metadata into the StoreGrid sgprp.db database file. On subsequent incremental backup schedules, StoreGrid will upload the changed bytes of the modified file to the Backup Server based on the signature/checksum of the initial full Backup data present in sgprp.db database file.

After client disaster recovery, new sgprp.db will be created. Since the old sgprp.db is not available in the client, StoreGrid client performed fresh full backup to the backup server. If the SGTrash option is enabled in your backup server, then the deleted data will be stored in backup server's "<Backup_Location>/SGTrash" location.

To recover the deleted data from the SGTrash Location, please follow the below link.

http://storegrid.vembu.com/online-backu ... tings.html

Note: From our next StoreGrid release(V4.4), we have a feature called "METADATA BACKUP" that backups StoreGrid internal database files(sgprp.db) to backup server. Once disaster recovery is done, we need to restore the sgprp.db files to database storage location and then we can continue incremental backups to the backup server.

We had to use the Disaster Recovery option today on one of our user's laptop. We were switching him to new hardware and figured it would be easier to simply install the SG client, perform a Disaster Recovery, then restore all his data. We did this so we didn't have to create new clients, new backup jobs, etc. To our surprise, ALL of the previous versions of his files are now gone. His backup job starts with the new full one that was done today. Is this how it's supposed to work? If he were to need a file from a couple weeks ago, we would be screwed because the only versions we would have are the current ones.

I was just curious if this feature has been developed or still on the roadmap. Thanks!

Hi,

Currently we are not supporting this type of filter configuration. We will add your request in our roadmap list and try to include the same in our future release based on the feasiblity.

Currently you can specify the folder name "Local" and have StoreGrid skip all folders with the name Local. But then it might skip folders like C:\Local as well.

Can I use an asterisk ( * ) in the filter?

For example, I'd like to setup a filter to exclude the same folder from a series of folders without having to enter the filter multiple times. Ex:

C:\Users\*\AppData\Local

This way I could "globally" exclude the AppData\Local folder from every user profile on the machine. Thanks!

I've created an Advanced Filter for a backup job backing up files.

Exclude specific folders configured in this backup schedule with the name "C:\Users\user\AppData\Local" and apply this rule to all levels of sub-folders.

Should it be set to "all levels of sub-folders" or "for the immediate subfolders only"? Also, is it possible to simply exclude the "AppData\Local" folder using only a relative path?

Hi jprateragg,

Yeah, we need to fix that. We'll try to fix it in the next release. For now, you will have move the last filter's contents into the one you want to remove and then click on - to remove the last filter.

Yeah, definitely need to fix it. Thanks for pointing this out.

Okay--that seems to work.

Another question, I had to edit a filter for one of the clients and I noticed that when I click the minus ( - ) button to delete a field, it starts deleting fields from the bottom, up. Is there any way for you to allow us to delete individual entries instead of just deleting from the bottom up? I don't know if this is a bug or something. I tried resetting the fields and submitting it then but then I received an error saying I had empty fields.

Hi,

Exclude specific folders configured in this backup schedule with the name "C:\Users\user\AppData\Local" and apply this rule to all levels of sub-folders.

should work.

Windows or Linux for StoreGrid Server

Hi Christian,

Both Linux and Windows for StoreGrid server are equally good. Most of our partners in Hosting Edition are using CentOS for deploying their StoreGrid server. There would not be any functionality changes in the backup server though, we recommend you to use CentOS if your client(s) used to backup Linux BMR and cPanel.

Apache connections limit and SGConfiguration

Hi , we found this into Apache log of storegrid interface

[Sat Apr 13 05:18:15 2013] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider r aising the MaxClients setting

backup stuck , web interface down , its look like there is a saturation of connections if Storegrid could not open all the backup channel ( the limit into SGConfiguration.conf ) , once this happened no more backup take place.

I would like to know how Storegrid handle connections from client and from Apache to Storegrid , if I have 35 customers for a total of 100 backup schedule how much connections those clients are suppose to open into my backup server ? , one by backup port 6061 or more ? if the server is limited to 10 simultaneous backup and other backup are knocking at 6061 how is this handle into apache ? From my log history its look like there is no mechanism to handle this , they keep trying and the customers receive a backup failed ?

Cluster how to

Hi Keven,

From your suggestion, we could understand that you need to use the main backup server for lookup alone and the loads should be shared between sub nodes. As, you told, we cannot limit the backup thread count in the backup server. We can only limit the restore and replication thread count for the backup server. For such load sharing, we have established "Round Robin Algorithm" in cluster deployment.

In round robin algorithm, if there are four nodes(including main node) in the cluster setup and there are about 40 backups simultaneously connecting to the main node, then it will be equally shared between all four nodes as 10 backups each depending upon the last backup connected time to each node. For further reference about "Cluster Deployment" and "Round Robin Algorithm", please refer the below documents.

Cluster how to

I read this page about cluster

http://storegrid.vembu.com/online-backu ... erver.html

so if there is a limitations into "fronend" apache the cluster is non fonctionning , how I could configure this for massive scaling ? Is there some pointer about Storegrid apache config and also about SGConfiguration about simultaneous backup , if I limit SGConfiguration to 10 backup I suppose that this limit is only for the backup server that we are doing it ?

Server = Head + Database , limit backup to 0 , apache cluster head , only for connections with customer
Server01 = Data limit backup to 10 port 3200X
Server02 = Data limit backup to 10 port 3200X
Server03 = Data limit backup to 10 port 3200X
etc....
is this a good idea ? last time I checked the port redirection was not working correctly so the cluster option was not an option , is there some new docs about clustering ?

Hi jprateragg,

This meta-data backup feature is currently available only for file backup. For plugin backups even after disaster recovery we can't continue running incremental since there will be a conflict with the previous created snapshot and current available snapshot, hence currently this option is not available for plugin backups. Also as of now in V4.4, we have to enable this feature manually while configuring file backup. Based on the customers request we will make this option enabled by default.

Hi bigdessert,

In your scenario, StoreGrid is getting crashed in your client when the backup is scheduled . To investigate the issue in detail, please send us the "sgoutput.txt" file generated by following the below steps.

i) Stop StoreGrid if it is already running.

ii) Open a command prompt and go to <STOREGRID_HOME> folder and start StoreGrid by executing the following command: "\bin\StoreGrid.exe > sgoutput.txt"

iii) Send the zip of sgoutput.txt file. The file will be available in the <StoreGrid_Installation_Dir>\Vembu\StoreGrid" folder.

Note: Normally StoreGrid will crash with the message 'Illegal Access Exception'. Hence please wait till StoreGrid exits then send the "sgoutput.txt" file to our support team.

Please send the 'sgoutput.txt' file to our support team at storegrid-support AT vembu DOT com email address. They will follow up over emails.

We are having this issue on a new installed client. Installed 4.2.0 and rand patches up to 4.3.0 and it crashes repeatedly once a backup job runs.

What was the fix for this?

Hi suredata,

Currently we are trying to reproduce this case(StoreGrid start up issue due to permission problem for the file ListeningPort.txt) in our environment. As we mentioned earlier, we have reproduced the 'php-chi.exe' issue and we are working on this case. Could you please contact our support team with anyone of your problematic client machine's access details. Our Technical team will analyze this case in your environment to find out the permanent resolution.
